There are at least two bands with the name Huckleberry Finn: 1) is a Japanese indie pop band formed in 1999 whose last album, Cairn was released in 2014. http://www.huckle-f.com/saito/Profile.html 2) is a Korean indie rock band started by Lee Ki Young in 1997. Lee Ki Young started Huckleberry Finn near Hong Ik University in 1997. As a core part of “Indi music” in Korea starting mid 1990s along with Crying Nut, Deli Spice, Kokoer and Sister’s barbershop, Huckleberry Finn (허클베리 핀) is a representative of Korean Indie Rock band. Huckleberry Finn certainly walked one road for 10 years pursuing their distinctive Rock music. Leader as well as the brain of Huckleberry Finn, Lee Ki Young is highly appraised from executives of the music industry as one of the best Singer songwriters in Korea. One of the most attractive eminences of Huckleberry Finn is their alluring voice of female vocal with strong charisma. “18th Wednesday”, the first record released in 1998 with Nam Sang Ah, the previous vocal is now part of another band named “Line #3 Butterfly.” Starting the 2nd album, Lee So Young joined Huckleberry Finn as main female vocal. She is famous of her neutral voice color and her powerful singing at live concerts. Songs in “18th Wednesday” can be categorized as Grunge or Alternative. Distinctive quality of Huckleberry Finn’s music world as well as outstanding completion of the album was a great hit with profound lyrics that throbbed people’s heart. Huckleberry Finn was a sensation among Indi bands. This album ranked 86 of “100 Korean Best Pop Song albums of 20th century,” which was assessed by critics and executives of music industry. With Lee So Young and Kim Yun Tae, Huckleberry Finn released the 2nd album under the title, “A guy who resembles me” in 2001. This album shows the possibility of growth and diversity of Huckleberry Finn’s music. Additional to the straightforward and powerful music of Huckleberry Finn’s first single, lyrical sense adds to their music color on the 3rd album. The quality of music is growing and due to Violin and Viola functioned as key part of a few songs, Huckleberry Finn got to pursue their own distinctive music different from other Indi bands. A song called “Desert” in this album always gave greatest finale at live performances and received absolute support from the fans. Huckleberry Finn’s third Album, “Star of Olympio” was released in 2004 with more grown and outstanding music quality. This album has been nominated as “This year’s album”, “This year’s musician (Group)” and “This year’s best Modern Rock” of “Korean Pop Music award” in 2004, which will be announced at the end of March. Huckleberry Finn has been highly praised of their value in media including daily newspapers (Chosun, Moon Hwa, Han Gyu rae and many more). This shows great support and appreciation of the fans and music related people regarding Huckleberry Finn’s unique music color in outstanding completion. Lyrical sense in powerful sound might appear alienated from each other, however; only through Huckleberry Finn, the two colors of music can be well harmonized and still plays great role of their music at present.
