Gary Smulyan

Born Bethpage NY on 4th April 1956, Gary Smulyan is one of the leading current exponents of the baritone saxophone, performing worldwide with many leading jazz artists as a member of big and small bands and as featured soloist. His credits include the Woody Herman, Dizzy Gillespie, Mel Lewis, Carla Bley and Dave Holland big bands. He has won Downbeat critics' and readers' polls. Smulyan's style can reasonably be described as "mainstream-modern", reflecting the spirit of his inspirations and mentors such as Pepper Adams and Harry Carney and his long-time colleague Joe Lovano. Leading his peers, Ronnie Cuber and Nick Brignola, and amongst other commitments, Smulyan appears as a member of the Three Baritone Saxophone Band. Read more on Last.fm.
