The New Jersey native grew up on Van Morrison and Neil Young, "my mother really loves getting people into Neil Young-she's almost obsessive and frankly it frightened me....but then I listened." Chris's father played the technical role by teaching guitar lessons everyday after school, "most kids were playing sports, doing drugs, talking to girls etc. while I was learning mixolydian scales. My father finally got me to a point where I knew more than he did... Almost like when you arm-wrestle your pops for the 50th time and finally, after 23 years, kick his ass. The guitar was pretty similar. Eventually his music theory kept growing and evolving while mine flatlined. The relationship almost turned competitive until I discovered writing. Music, in other words, was at the center of every conversation." Chris remarks, "the only time we weren't fighting or arguing was when it had something to do with playing or listening to music.
