The Tapiola Choir (Tapiolan kuoro) is a children's chorus based in Espoo, Finland. It was founded in 1963 by Erkki Pohjola and is recognized as one of the world's most respected youth choirs. The choir's distinctive style has become widely known by music critics as the "Tapiola Sound." Performing a mixed repertoire of classical and folk music, the choir appears some 40 times a year in Finland and abroad, making as many as 6 to 8 foreign trips annually. The Tapiola Choir has around 65 members, young musicians aged 9 to 18, all of whom also play at least one musical instrument in addition to singing. The choir’s concerts often include choreography and instrumental numbers. The annual Christmas concert with the title "Katso ihme taivainen" (Behold, a miracle from heaven) is a tradition dating back to the 1960s. The choir has had three artistic directors during its nearly 50 year history. Founding director Erkki Pohjola led it from 1963 to 1994. Kari Ala-Pöllänen was the director from 1994 to 2008, when he was succeeded by the current director, Pasi Hyökki. www.tapiolankuoro.fi/choir-today/ Read more on Last.fm.
