The Romany Rye’s sound recalls everything from the greats like Neil Young and Billy Bragg to more contemporary acts like Band of Horses and Phosphorescent. MacMaster is a skilled songwriter, weaving contemplative metaphors with relatable stories and situations, touching on love and loss with an aching wisdom that far exceeds his years. Despite growing up in Southern California, MacMaster’s music has an earthy, southern feel behind it, and perhaps his LA background is responsible for the Laurel Canyon elements of his sound, which, while fresh and current, also has an instant comfort and familiarity to it… Like it would make just as much sense if you stumbled upon the Romany Rye in the new releases section as it would if you found it on an old jukebox at a dive bar in the middle of nowhere. The songs of the Romany Rye feel like great companions as you tread down the dusty road of the unknown. Respectfully nodding to different regions and different eras, MacMaster and the Romany Rye are on a course all their own. Read more on Last.fm.
