Songs from the edge Were we looking for a more concerted display of happy sadness, Purple Eve might do the trick. Again from Moscow, the duo of Yano Yano and Ave Jassen have been performing together since 2004. Legend tells us they met in modeling school, just before they were both expelled for refusing to be photographed in furs. By 2008 they had left that career entirely behind and decided instead to take to the stage. Early recordings were self-defined as "touching, raw lo-fi material with a romantic air. It's all played to the strains of a distressed or troubled guitar." The overall aim was to evoke a "certain sense of tragedy." Now Purple Eve is a sextet. And not long ago, the Moscow entertainment magazine 'Afisha' defined their style as 'gothic pop-rock'. Sounds a bit crazy, but ok for Purple Eve/ The Russian adjective for purple or violet can sometimes mean "peculiar," if not "crazy." As a result, our musicians like to see "Purple Eve" as synonymous with "The Day before Madness Set In." Text by David MacFadyen www.purple-eve.com Read more on Last.fm.
