Cortel brings some deep, floating, bassy, RnB inspired beats alongside some soul shuddering ethereal vocals, mixed in with an occasional jazzy vibe. There seems to be a lot of mystique behind this musical genius. The band members, based in the fifth biggest city of Russia, started their musical career with indie rock but in January 2015 decided to move to more electronic sound. Sergei Kashkovsky is band’s vocalist/song-writer while Dmitry Tochilin is responsible for the whole electronic production. Not without irony guys admit that primarily they intended to write trap music. But when creating the first track they understood it’s too boring for them. After several experiments they found out that the most original and suitable way to beautify their music is to use samples and echoes of a forgotten cultural epoch — jazz of the early and middle 20th century. Some months later Alexander Ivanov the drummer joined the band. Cortel presented their debut album of the same name on Ezhevika Label (Minsk, Belarus). The band compiled their previously released singles into one album. Those singles were enthusiastically accepted by the listeners in Russia and outside the country, causing a number of articles and premieres on blogs all around the world. “This album became a part of us. We both contributed our personal experience in it and tried to paint something wonderful for the listeners”, say the guys. For Cortel guys it’s still not completely clear what genre of music they actually play: “Dmitry thinks we play IDM while I'm sure it’s RnB”, says Sergei the vocalist. “Still there is one big thing that unites us: despite the dominance of electronica in our music we try to create something ‘alive’.
