Carly Danielle Henley (born Long Beach, Ca, July 30, 1990, died Seattle, Wa, October 6, 2010) was an aspiring singer/songwriter and student at the University of Washington. She committed suicide by hanging at her university on October 6, 2010. Henley majored in women’s studies at the University of Washington. Over the course of the summer of 2010, Henley performed in local coffee shops and the infamous Hard Rock Cafe located in downtown Seattle. Her songs display an average girl’s life, and her loving style of music is happy and cheerful, which is how many have described her. She was a big fan Colbie Callait, and posted YouTube covers of her songs in 2007-2009. She released an EP in 2009 titled “She’s Beautiful” consisting of 4 tracks. She was known for her happy charm and loving nature, never leaving anyone in the dark. On October 6, 2010 amid a dark path she tragically took her own life as she hung from a local fraternity stairwell. In the midst of this young woman's tragedy the community at the University gathered for a vigil that same week, thousands came to show their respects. Hundreds came to share the way she touched them. And tens came to tell how she loved them indiscriminately for years and years. The mystery behind her death still remains although many put the blame towards depression, while some claim anti-depressants as the culprit. No one will ever really know, but one word many use to describe her is "angelic". Nine months after her death, local family members, friends, and community members helped put together a fund to help girls learn to play guitar and also help towards depression victims. Within 3 months, they had gathered nearly $40,000 for the girls guitar camp, and also to record an album of young Carly's music; some of it consists of old recordings, while other tracks are her music and lyrics sung by family and friends. "Love the Skin Your’e In" represents her final musical legacy. Carly Henley will always remain true to those who had the privilege to have known her, and to those her death has affected.
