Formed in Japan in 1997 Sugar Soul were a “new R & B” / hip-hop group containing vocalist Aiko Machida DJ Hasebe (programming), and Kawabe (composer). The group disbanded in 2001. Sugar Soul were commercially successful during their period and are best known for their hit song Garden featuring Kenji from Dragon Ash. The songs popularity saw it also reach #43 on the United World Chart. Categorized as “new R & B"; Sugar Soul's music had a bass heavy sound with RnB standard vocals and a strong DJ presence. Sugar Soul are often credited as being an influential figure in bringing urban music to the Japanese mainstream alongside other rising acts of their time such as Misia and 宇多田ヒカル. Tracks such as the raunchy 今すぐ欲しい Feat. ZEEBRA on their debut release Those Days put an adult spin onto a Japanese music industry dominated by lighthearted pop music.
