randomNumber

randomNumber, aka Matt Robson, creates what has been described as ‘Northern Wrongbeat'; a mesh of emotive, brooding harmonies drawn and quartered by complex, beat-heavy rhythms. It's digital music with a human heart at its centre. More bands live in Leeds LS6 than probably any other single postcode area in the UK, and in the centre of that you’ll find randomNumber – the beating electronic exception to the hardcore, guitar-fuelled rule. Robson’s hyperactive beat mechanics and alchemical sound manipulations are bound together with a keen sense of melody shaped by his many years of playing in the Leeds alternative music scene, most notably as drummer for Hood (which culminated with their release Home Is Where It Hurts). Coming from his background playing in bands, Robson has rallied hard against the stereotypical laptop clichés, and imbues his own shows with a keen sense of energy and punk attitude, using two unsynchronized laptops and a tabletop of controllers and effects. Previous randomNumber releases have turned up on a plethora of respected indie and electronic labels, such as Mogwai’s Rock Action imprint (an EP which NME named their “Dance Single of the Week”, back when they did that kind of thing), Highpoint Lowlife, Rocket Racer, vacuous pop, Fencing Flatworm, and Catmobile Records. You may also have seen his work on numerous compilations from the likes of Tigerbeat6, Darla, and 555 Recordings. He's toured the UK and US extensively, playing shows with 65daysofstatic, Kid606, DJ /rupture, Cex and Dntel amongst others. Read more on Last.fm.
