Undershakers was an all-female powerpop band that greeted from Asturias, Spain. Early influences of British sixties garage bands progressively developed into a more personal Spanish flavoured pop. Sisters Mar (guitar) and Alicia Alvarez (bass) wrote most of the repertory, while Sandra Tocino provided main vocals and strong live presence. Drummer Cristina Gutierrez and keyboardist Lara Gonzalez completed the band's lineup. Between 1995 and 1999 they published five albums. Despite the promotional support of indie label Subterfuge, which managed to place some of their songs in ads and film soundtracks, the band never reached the large audience that powerful live shows and good reviews augured for them. In 1999 the Alvarez sisters started a parallel band named Pauline en la Playa, which featured songs with richer, Latin-influenced sound textures and denser all-Spanish lyrics, in the tradition of Vainica Doble or friends and neighbours Nosoträsh. The succesful parallel project soon became their main project, and Undershakers was put to sleep. Nevertheless, the band has reunited for the occasional live show. Read more on Last.fm.
