There are at least two bands to have recorded under the name of The Serenaders. 1. A vocal group from the early 1950s who underwent several name changes. 2. A modern retrobilly band from Atlanta formed in 2007. 1. The Detroit vocal group got their start singing on and around the streetcorners of Hastings Street in the late 1940s. Starting out with 4 members, the founding group consisted of Theron Hill, Noah Howell, Ike Reese, and Norman Thrasher. They recorded throughout the early 1950s in Detroit and recorded with JVB Records, Roxy, and later several singles with Coral Records, a subsidiary of Decca. By 1953, the group underwent several name and personnel changes, eventually becoming The Royal Jokers. 2. The Atlanta-based modern retrobilly band (a self-given description) originally formed in 2007 with founding members Barton Caplan (acoustic guitar, vocals) and Joel Glogowski (bass, vocals). Caplan cut his teeth writing songs and singing in bands in Atlanta, Washington D.C., Boston, and San Francisco. He then met Glogowski in Atlanta, who was playing electric guitar at the time. The two started playing and listening to music together and, under the influence of Glogowski’s sizeable country music collection, took a trip to Nashville to visit the country music hall of fame. By the time they were driving back to Atlanta, they had agreed to quit their current rock band and form their own Americana/country group. Glogowski bought a stand-up bass and Caplan aimed his prolific songwriting skills at topics ranging from endearing love songs to obsessive Hollywood fandom, blending elements of rockabilly, country, doo-wop, and rock. Over the next couple of years, the duo built up an impressive repertoire of original songs and performed at various small clubs and coffee shops in and around Atlanta. In August of 2009, Caplan and Glogowski met Danny Arana, a local musician who had played in several bands of wildly varying genres and instrumentation. Arana, a multi-instrumentalist, joined the group playing electric guitar and singing vocal harmonies. Within a couple of months, they played their first gig at a friend's party and from there continued to perform at clubs in and around Atlanta, and later the Southeast and beyond. In April of 2010, The Serenaders released an EP and single, "Before I'm Done." They are currently working on a second EP slated for a fall 2010 release. Read more on Last.fm.
