The Hyperions

The Hyperions were a rockabilly-based rock group from Los Angeles, CA. Hyperions frontman Jason Planco began his musical journey early in life. Growing up in Hollywood, California, Jason found himself surrounded by artistry. His neighborhood had musicians, painters, actors, and writers presenting inspiration in a variety of forms. Drawn to the guitar at age twelve, he began to compose originals immediately and desired to create his own sound. It was his pedigree to some extent to do so. The cousin of fifties Rockabilly songwriter Bobby "Cravin" Roberts, Jason was destined to travel on the path of the musician. In the early 90s, Jason met a kindred spirit in Annette Valdes. The Los Angeles Rockabilly scene began to pulse with new talent. Drawn to similar musical influences, it was in this atmosphere that Jason and Annette found each other. Annette Valdes stood out in the crowd. A multi-instrumentalist, she chose to play an upright bass studying with renowned swing bassist Wally Hersom (Big Sandy & his Fly Rite Boys). A Southern Californian, Annette's passion for music was strongly influenced by her surroundings. Her family worked at Leo Fender's guitar and amplifier factory providing a unique foundation for a young musician. Javier Estrella was next to join the Hyperion fold. An established drummer from Northern California, Javier became immersed in the swing and rockabilly scene in Los Angeles. Keeping the beat with both his drum set and his feet, Javier was a dance instructor at the infamous Derby in Los Feliz. When Jason and Annette met him the bond was instant. They immediately asked him to join the band. These three form the core of the band on every Hyperions album, from 1993's Dark Time to 2003's Under My Sombrero. Several other musicians have recorded with or been members of the Hyperions over their 11-12 year run, including: DJ Bonebrake (better known as the drummer from X) on Marimba/Vibraphone; Aram Arslanian on Keyboards, Guitars, Lapsteel, and Harmonica; and Alex Hernandez on Saxophone. The Hyperions played their last show on July 4th, 2004. Jason Planco moved to Las Vegas where he plays with his new band, the Silver State Slackers. Javier Estrella still lives in Los Angeles, where he has been involved in multiple musical projects such as the Sunshine Brothers. Read more on Last.fm.
