Sounds of Sputnik is headed by Roma Kalitkin, whose signature sound mixes post-rock, shoegaze and dream pop with a slight kickback to noise pop. He draws inspiration from My Bloody Valentine, Jesus and Mary Chain, Ride, Sonic Youth, Happy Mondays, and Slowdive, although the musical semblance of this project seems closer to the style of Mogwai, Air Formation, Hammock, Airiel, Jesu, Highspire, and The Twilight Sad. Dubbing himself a “white crow”, the music he makes has always gone against trends within his home country of Russia, both as a solo artist and for the 20 years he played in various post-punk, alternative and shoegaze bands. While only recently emerged on the scene, the band's successes have been quite remarkable. Sounds of Sputnik's debut LP 'New Born' features and is co-written and co-produced by celebrated dreampop duo Ummagma and features guest appearances by members of Swervedriver, Brian Jonestown Massacre, OMD and Russia's Zapreshennie Barabanshiki. The 'New Born' LP charted in the CMJ charts 7 weeks, the first time a Russian indie artist has held so long in these charts. They also earned recognition upon receiving a Russian Indie Music Award in the 'Young Blood' category and an award for Best East European Video at the 2014 Independent Music Video Awards, not to mention numerous mentions in 'Best of' lists for 2014. Initially released by Britain's Ear to Ear Records and then Raphalite Records, this album is slated for re-release in early 2016 by Texas-based Moon Sounds Records.
