Reef Project

Los Angeles DJ Thee-O (real name Jacob Ofilas) has always loved Ambient music. His early influences include The Cure, New Order, Joy Division, Sisters of Mercy and eventually got into Eno, Tangerine Dream, The Orb, KLF and others. He soon began to DJ at raves in 1992 and discovered the Chill Rooms. He started making ambient mixtapes that were very popular in the Los Angeles area. At the end of 2000 he started producing ambient and downtempo music. He modeled his style after a theme of aquariums, hence Reef Project, and in the summer of 2001 he released his first CD entitled Star. Reaction to that CD was beyond what he expected. One of the tracks was even used for a compilation called Other Animals from the Australian label Couchblip. His album Deep End is almost dance-able deep house with minimal and sparse electronica. From dirty downtempo to angelic ambience this album takes the ideas of Star and fleshes them out to new heights. Subsequent releases include the New Environ E.P. as well as various remixes.
