"As unpredictable as the path of a thunderstorm over the Mountains of Madness, the music of Pineal Ventana, roars out of that hostile alternate dimension which H.P. Lovecraft described as 'the spaces between.'" - Creative Loafing Atlanta,Georgia-based unit formed in 1993 by Mitchell Foy and Clara Clamp following the demise of Foy's King-Kill/33. Kim Chee was shortly recruited on guitar, joined by Travis Kotler also on guitar, and Brian Cook on bass. This line-up produced the debut self-released 7" 'Stagnancy Is Revolting' circa '94. The record marked, among other things, the first use of Clamp's drawings, which would be featured in much of the band's output. Shane Pringle (ex-Go Devils) joined on sax and the six-piece released the "Philosopher's Stone" 7" (packaging for this included a poster with a photo from an infamous gig) and their debut CD 'Living Soil' on the local Half Baked label, circa '95. "Indica" and "Mark of Zero" from the disc became live regulars. An appearance at the '96 SXSW highlighted a year which ended with the exit of Kotler who was quickly replaced by Jason LaFarge. 1997 saw the permanent installment of John Whitaker on bass, and the recording and release of the landmark 'Breathe As You Might' CD. A massive jump in quality and complexity of songs, musicianship, and recording quality can be heard on this disc compared to the previous. It is considered by many to be the definitive PV recording, including tracks like "Waterlogged" and "Delamorte" and the massive "Deadlands". This, the most stable line-up in the band's history, embarked on several tours. Two releases defined 1998 for the band, first the locally-released 'Expel' EP (Shoestring) and more significantly the 'Malpractice' CD (Unit Circle), recorded at the famous BC Studio in NYC. This latter disc is considered another high water mark for the group, containing the tremendous "Hooded Mirror" and searing "Taenia Solium". Pringle exited the group around this time. Following the release of '99's 'Axes To Ice' CD (Unit Circle) Whitaker bowed out, followed by Chee, and the band morphed again with the introduction of Brian Ginn and Lindell Todd to the fold. New material created by this group never made it to tape, and the band folded in 2001 following turmoil between founders Foy and Clamp. Foy went on to start Tenth To The Moon Pringle plays with Atlanta bands Tiger! Tiger!, TagTeam and Grinder Nova. LaFarge started his own studio, Seizures Palace in Brooklyn NY. Kim Chee and Clara record under the name AkuYou, Clara also sings in the Atlanta band Lonesome. Edited from the band's Myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/pinealventana "Pineal Ventana are almost the Unit Circle uber-band. They embody the ideals of experimentation, exploration, and genre-defying, that we like in all of our releases. That they can do this while maintaining a good tour schedule and amazing stage performances is just icing." - Unit Circle Read more on Last.fm.
