Máia is an American singer-songwriter and classically trained vocalist and instrumentalist. Her passion for creating engaging harmonies led Máia to an early focus on composing arrangements for voice, woodwinds and piano. While voice and flute are her instruments of choice, she also plays saxophones, clarinets, piccolo, recorders, keyboards and piano. In the early-mid 90's, Máia began singing and playing keyboards with the rock group Kaddywompus in Boulder, CO taking their high intensity vocals and hard rock sound around the Denver Metro area. Over the years Máia experimented with singing some blues sets with various artists, following in the footsteps of her great uncle and blues performer, Brownie McGhee. Though she loves rocking out with a band, over time she discovered an appreciative audience for her more tender solo vocal interludes at the piano. After the members of Kaddywompus went their separate ways in 1995, Máia continued performing primarily as a solo artist in college towns, shaping her own soulful sound with regular shows at small venues around Blacksburg, VA and later back in Boulder, CO. In 1998 Máia disappeared from the live music scene to work in radio and eventually behind the scenes in audio production, voice acting and podcasting. Recently, Máia re-released "'97 Live" (for streaming and download-only) which features live solo performances of some of her original music. New musical projects are in the works for fall/winter 2007. Read more on Last.fm. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
