Gossip | Madhat | The Theophilus Carter LP |
Edinburgh born Madhat McGore has been writing and producing music for the past 10 years. He started writing raps and experimenting with rhyming while at school. From what started as something to kill time soon became a lot more serious. Aided by his life long friend fellow Edinburgh artist known as The Riddlah the pair began making songs under the name Dark Rumors. Over the next year the two unknown artist's would begin to flood Edinburgh and the internet with their dark and grimey song's about their take on life often mixing the harsh reality of the world as it is and also with a fictional spin at the same time. After starting to make a small buzz on the internet and in the club scene, Dark Rumors were soon signed to Glasgow hip hop label Powercut Productions. Although much work and effort has gone into the Dark Rumors debut album, it has still not been completed and though in the final stages, it is unknown when it will be released. During the making of the Dark Rumor album, Madhat had a little more time on his hands and thus began working on his solo career. Through the club scene and internet Madhat met a lot of other emcees and began to work with a large number of people. Soon his collection of solo songs began to build along with his reputation for hard work and dedication. With the Dark Rumor album on hold for the time being, Madhat, Riddlah and the talented Dave Gunn and other's started the Evil Residents, a large crew of emcees and producers. Many tracks were worked on as a collective but due to people living busy life's and other circumstances, the Evil Residents morphed from the big group it was to jus being Madhat, UTurn, Riddlah and Dandy. Although many tracks were made, the Evil Residents split due to unexplainable differences with one member of the group. The crew then came to the conclusion that different paths would need to be taken but almost all off the group are still very close friends. With the Dark Rumor album still on hold and Madhat's reputation growing it was decided that he would release a solo album and this being released before the Dark Rumor album. Madhat and his crew worked non stop, and after an incredible short space of time it was taken through to Glasgow to be mastered and polished off by Powercut Productions. The album titled `Unvarnished Scribbles' was released on 25th Aug 2008. The album was a favorite within the Scottish hip hop scene, and also with many other people who had before overlooked Scottish hip hop. The album even got a glowing report in the Scottish Daily Record where the editor wrote "A massive landmark album for Scottish Rap. East coast rapper Madhat (one half of hip hop duo Dark Rumors) creates a solo debut of unquestionable class"(Edition FRIDAY SEPT 5th 2008). This left most people in no doubt and one of Scotland's best selling newspaper that Madhat was a star in the making. However due to the album not being driven in the right direction and marketed like it deserved the album never gained the exposure and applause that it deserved. This left Madhat feeling that an album that could have went so much further than it did, should be left to die away and a fresh start should be made. With Madhat knowing that he could work as hard as any other artist out there he reached out for the help of long term friend Remember, who started promoting Madhat, and doing whatever he could to help. Over the following weeks, Remember came to be Madhat's Manager working non stop on whatever he could, from sending numerous emails, selling CD's, and setting up photo shoots etc. Remember put him in touch with 3 men with a vision for the future. These 3 men were John McGhee, Jay McLeary and John Meikle. Between the three of them and years of planning they decided to start their own record label with the view that so many Scottish artist's leave Scotland to follow their dream. Why not give these artist's a chance to shine in their homeland. Also opening it's arm's to all countries full of talent to come to join the Music Comes First Records Family. The Label were very excited when approached by Remember, also childhood friends with John McGhee and John Meikle with the intention to sign Madhat to a record deal. With meetings between the member's of the label and Madhat it was agreed that the up and coming artist would sign to the record label. With Madhat also working a full time job and working all his free time on his upcoming album from Music Comes First Records, Madhat is set to unleash every bit of spirit and soul into the album titled "Babblin".
