Karl Madis was born in 1959 in Tallinn. In 1984 he graduated from saxophone-class of the music-school named by Georg Ots, his teacher there was Aleksander Rjabov. Karl’ s phenomenal music-career started from his first ever performance in the Estonian Television in May of 1979. Followed a little pause because the two years spent in the army. After the army, in 1981 a band called Mahavok was formed along with famous musicians – Karl Madis, Heini Vaikmaa, Kalev Aas, Peeter Oronon, Raul Arras, Kristjan Kirme and Sven Himma. Their first single “Mahavok” with three songs was released in 1984 and a double-CD also named “Mahavok” was recorded only recently – in 2002. In 1983 a band Karavan was formed, which celebrated its 20th anniversary in November 2003. During these 20 years Karavan has recorded 3 LP-s and 7 CD-s. Karavan today is: Karl Madis (vocals, guitar, harmonica, saxophone), Agu Tammeorg (guitar, vocals), Jaak Lutsoja (keyboards), Margus Martmaa (base, vocals), Dmitri Dmitrenko (drums), Enn Laidre (sound), Toivo Lend (manager). Karavan was the most popular band in Estonia in the years of 1985-86. And Karl Madis was chosen the best Estonian male singer in the years of 1986 and 2002. Karl Madis has performed on all of the biggest stages in Estonia. In the years 1985-86 Karavan gave more than 200 concerts per year.
