There are several musicians named John Payne: 1) John Payne is a British musician, best known as the lead singer and bassist of ASIA from 1992 to 2006 and from June 2007 with ASIA Featuring John Payne. John Payne became the frontman of ASIA in 1992 at the invitation of founding member Geoff Downes, replacing vocalist/bassist John Wetton. During Payne's tenure, ASIA released 8 studio albums, several live albums and toured internationally. He is a founding and current member of modern progressive rock band GPS. He is also a guitarist, composer, recording engineer and record producer. His production company Devgel, Inc. is based in Los Angeles, CA. 2) John Payne is an American funk/R&B bass/guitar player and engineer who has performed with artists including George Clinton and Parliament/Funkadelic, Merl Saunders, Prince, John Blackwell, Larry Graham and Graham Central Station, Rick James, and The Coup. He is the founder of the Oakland, CA-based band John Payne and The Hurt. 3) John Payne is an American saxophonist/clarinetist/flutist who has recorded with Van Morrison on “Astral Weeks”, Bonnie Raitt on “Give It Up” (for which he was nominated as best clarinetist by the Playboy Jazz Poll), Peter C. Johnson and Noel Stookey (of Peter Paul and Mary). In the 1960's he formed Manic Depressives, together with Peter C. Johnson and Paul Rishell.
