"Alive Electronic" Somehow familiar, sometimes unnerving: inina gap is a group of poets and partisans joining intellect and emotion. Musical tension abounds in this mix of electronica, funk, and rock – originality bursts forth from the continual and surprising interchange of complexity and lightness, which becomes even more apparent during one their optically opulent stage shows. Named after a classical musician The project began in the year 2000, when Ludwig Heili moved from Villach to New York to make music. A short time later, he founded the electro-fusion formation inina gap together with two friends, both also from suburban Carinthia. They named the band after 19th century violinist Nicoló Paganini, considered by his colleagues of the time to be ‘puzzling’ and ‘peculiar’. “He revolutionized the classical violin, people called him ‘the devil’s violinist’, and it was said that he sold his soul to the devil in order to achieve his success. As the band says, “It remains an interesting concept, one in fact reflected in today’s Zeitgeist.” Debut album - Software Society The first complete work - Software Society - was released in 2005, chock full of electro-fusion-beats alternating between psychedelic chill-out and groovy club sound, strewn with elements of soul and funk that blend to create a neverending, constantly mutating kaleidoscope of sound. Sublimated Emotions Over the years, the band’s music has constantly evolved - out of countless sessions, recordings, and live concerts in Vienna, New York, L.A., Lisbon, and Carinthia. inina gap has expanded its formation to include five artists on the new CD The End of Red, which is to be released (hopefully) soon. Singer Johanna Tham and bassist Marie Elaine can be heard for the first time on this album. Drummer Aram Zarikian, who has accompanied inina gap on and off from the very start, has now finally become a permanent fixture. The End of Red is the product of an organic sound conglomerate, softer and more precise than the debut album. Quiet notes, small gestures, and the sometimes strong, sometimes gentle voice of Johanna Tham are dosed as needed, leaving enough room for sublimated emotions in no need of any explanation. Words for the Audience While themes like self-knowledge and reflection were treated on the first album, at times ironic and self-critical, language and content are central to the current project, biophile poetry with an aura of both vulnerability and optimism, describing for example a world in which minimalist beauty wins against urban monstrosities, “There’s a flower in a crack of the asphalt and the cars drive around it to let it grow”. Another highlight of the band – the urban-graphic abstraction of their live shows. The audiovisual show is one with Inina Gap’s music.
