The Guarneri Quartet is an American string quartet originally founded in 1964. In 2005, the group is comprised of Arnold Steinhardt (first violin), John Dalley (second violin), Michael Tree (viola), and Peter Wiley (cello). David Soyer was the cellist from 1964–2001. The Quartet's 40th anniversary was celebrated during an extensive tour in the United States, Europe and South America in the 2003, 2004 and 2005 seasons. The Quartet continues their longstanding performance at the University of Maryland, College Park, where they serve on the university's faculty. These include Mozart’s six “Haydn” quartets, Schubert’s late quartets and quintet, and pieces by Brahms, Schumann, Dvorak, and Janacek. Of particular importance are the Guarneri’s recordings of Beethoven’s complete string quartets made in the 1960’s, available from RCA in three sets with three CDs in each. The Guarneri String Quartet released a CD in Spring 2001 of Quartets by Ravel, Debussy and Fauré, recorded for Surroundedby Entertainment. Recordings produced by RCA Red Seal and Philips, include Juan Crisostomo de Arriaga's String Quartet Nos. 1-3 (Philips), and collaborations with artists Artur Rubinstein, Pinchas Zukerman; and Boris Kroyt and Mischa Schneider of the Budapest Quartet. The Quartet has also recorded Mendelssohn's String Quartet No. 3, on the Arabesque label, and a recording of the Mendelssohn Octet, Op. 20, in a collaboration with the Orion Quartet.
