Everett James

Everett James: On the One Everett James is the new impresario of electro funk, heralding the return of sincerely raw and passionate, vintage-futuristic music. Like early 80s dance jams, his head spinning rhythms are accented with synthesized melodies that sparkle through struggles for personal freedom with love drunk optimism. By summoning his stylistic ancestry, Everett James offers an over-saturated digital world with music that is as straight forward as it is ambitious. A self contained composer of acoustic and producer of electronic music, James is responsible for the full instrumentation and production on his latest project Life. This twelve track album drips with syrupy southern bass lines of the Cameo era, lustrous guitar thrashes of Metallica, elements of Latin jazz, and a soulful vocal style most accurately placed in the 1960s. In Life Everett James introduces listeners to his diverse approach to music making by offering them a slice taken directly from his personal journal. He plans on re-launching and promoting the project in an extended stay in Europe within the next year. “Asheville, [North Carolina] is a musically eclectic, though small city,” says James. In the days of his youth, his hometowns disconnect from the stream of pop music provided the perfect incubator for his talents. Born into a musical family, Everett learned to project his voice from his sister and father who played in various bands to help support the family unit. He matured during hip hop’s golden era of the late 80s and early 90s. During this time he awakened his performance abilities and diversified his musical taste among well-versed locals. During his 18th year of life, James took a job as a producer and A&R with his cousin’s well-funded indie label in Atlanta. The position afforded him the glory of young success and the gory perils from greedy outsiders. “I was there for the music. I’m coming from a small town and had no idea how shady and evil the music industry is.” During his first two years in Atlanta, James floated above the stream of sex, drugs and rock and roll that tempted to wash him away. Everett used his experiences at the label to build his own recording studio in his father’s basement. Here, James produced and recorded local artists, hosted seasonal bar-b-ques, and, even recorded a song with Parliament astrophysicist George Clinton. With music as a top priority, his sensibilities foster much experience and inspire him to continue searching his passion for new sounds. Today, Everett James shines as a multi-instrument powerhouse of soul on the one. From celestial sightings on his quest for love, to deep hues of midnight blues, James makes your body talk with super-heavy funk that keeps you in the mood! When the birds chirp ‘round dawn, Everett James feels most connected to the source, thankfully giving birth to another gloriously undiscovered day. “When you know something you can do it anywhere,” said his father. By honoring those who helped pave the way, Everett James makes his home wherever his heart leads him. He’s already convinced that when listeners free their minds the rest will surely follow.
