Since its inception in the year 2000, Etnika has been ‘the band who are single-handedly spearheading the renaissance in Maltese roots music’ both locally and internationally. Through its on-going research and resulting performances, it has showcased some of the last and most prominent members of the folk-music tradition including the late folk-singer Il-Budaj and musician Il-Ħammarun. Locally it has created a newly found sense of tradition amongst the newer generations. These local corsairs have travelled extensively to music festivals throughout Europe and the Mediterranean creating a stir in over fifteen countries including the famed Montreux Jazz Festival and exposing their interpretation and innovation of local music. The project has been awarded some of the most prestigious awards for its contribution to local musical heritage and reinterpreting and presenting local tradition in a new and innovative way. Maltese gypsy-punks are now back with fresh island grooves infused with elements of dance, funk ‘n ska. The latest sounds forged on traditional instruments riotous tambourines, gutsy folk cries, stomping feet and body percussion. Musically etnika infuses its new material with a whole new array of sounds and beats, lyrics and melodies humorously popularising its music with a new and young generation through danceable radio hits.
