Ensamble GurrufÃo is one of the most interesting instrumental groups from Venezuela, formed in 1984 by virtuosos Cheo Hurtado (cuatro player), Cristóbal Soto (mandolinist) and Luis Julio Toro (flutist). David Peña (double bassist) completed the ensemble in 1989. They focused on the research, arrangement and reinterpretation of Venezuelan Folk music with a classical-educated approach, but allowing for improvisations as a fundamental element for their performances. Throughout the years the band has performed with many different artists from Venezuela and other countries. The music moods vary from melancholic and sentimental up to festive and cheerful pieces. An additional member Juan Ernesto Laya (maracas) joined the ensemble since 1998, when Cristóbal Soto left the group. Ensamble GurrufÃo has occasionally incorporated guest members, such as Jaime MartÃnez (oboe) and Moisés Torrealba (bandola). Read more on Last.fm.
