Absinthe | Dinosaurs With Horns | Diogenes Xmas Compilation 2010 |
Dinosaurs with Horns was formed in 1982 by Joseph Hammer and Rick Potts who had collaborated on several projects both individually and as members of the loosely formed collective, the Los Angeles Free Music Society (LAFMS). In the early 90's they began performing and recording extensively with ex-Monitor, Steve Thomsen, as the trio Solid Eye including a month-long tour of Japan in 2002. Over the years Potts and Hammer have each collaborated with an impressive array of noise/sound musicians. Some of these sound artists are LAFMS cohorts like Tom Recchion, Joe Potts,Smegma and John Duncan and others are internationally acclaimed experimentalists like Otomo Yoshihide, Eugene Chadbourne, Don Preston, Thomas Dimuzio, Chris Cutler and Keiji Heino. Rick Potts is an improviser and instrument maker who has been on the musical fringe of Los Angeles for a quarter of a century, A founding member of the L.A. Free Music Society (L.A.F.M.S.), Potts played in one of its premier units, Le Forte Four. A home-made sound scientist (with custom hinge-neck guitars, musical saw, electronics and tray of toys) whose idiosyncratic methodology produces sounds which are unique, alarming and funny. Joseph Hammer has kept busy creating experimental sounds in Los Angeles for over 20 years using the tape loop as his main voice. His first major project, Points of Friction began in 1980 with the intention of creating a surreal transportational environment via unidentifiable sounds fused with abstract visual projections. Wearing a white cotton glove, Hammer blurs the boundaries between digital and analog. His live "phonomontage" uses computerized sources abstracted by hand with tape loops on vintage magnetic audio gear. Read more on Last.fm.
