The Dead Never Sounded Better Live! Surf the Dark Side with the Dead Sea Surfers. The Band is a Punk, Goth, Synthpop hybrid of sorts meshing several styles into one. The end product is a Smooth, tight, distinct sound reminiscent of the old school in your face, wall of sound. That sound in a live setting has never really gone out of style. One reviewer of the bands self titled cd is quoted as saying “There is sure to be something on this CD that triggers a memory or invoke a feeling.”1. And another reviewer states, “ The Dead Sea Surfers strike a balance between having a recognizable signature sound and providing enough variety to engage the listener.”2. The Band Leader and singer, songwriter Aleister Tennyson Hobbs is the vocalist, guitarist and recording keyboardist for the band, Aleister has performed with various projects through the years. Aleister is a native of New York City, and at times could be seen doing pick up jams on the spot under the band name Dead Sea Surfers from 1996 through 2003 in Upper East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia, mainly as a short notice fill in band for Venues where musical acts would cancel last minute. Aleister's early history in the Moral Majority Dance Band, MMDB, included playing shows at CBGB's, The Pyramid, The Dive Bar / Slipper Room, Heckles & Jeckles, SNUFU, Februarys and the Right Track Inn in the early to mid 80's, very young then. He has constantly lived his life traveling between NY and the Tri Cities, Tennessee where his father was born. In 2004 Aleister Tennyson Hobbs then living in Tennessee, relocated to NYC to play keyboards for the Brooklyn based gothic project, Dead Emotion, at the request of then ex-girlfriend Bassist, Kitty Hawke. Aleister later got his friend, drummer, Danny Crusher, formally of band, Jones Crusher to join the band. The DE band then had 5 members, 4 musicians of which, whom had long histories related to the deeply entrenched old school punk Goth synthpop scene of NYC. DE later put out 2 professional Videos shot for the songs; “Bytch” & “Nothing to Die For,” with the assistance of NJ based video filming company Axis Video who notably had a history of recording gothic acts as anyone can plainly see by checking their videography. Dead Emotion also recorded a full length album, which to date has yet to be released. The Dead Emotion project played in NYC in over a dozen locations in 2004 including CBGB's smaller room the Gallery at 313 before it’s closure, The Continental, Batcave / Albion, Nocturnal Creatures, Metasin aka ULTRA SOUND Lounge, Saints & Sinners, on Long Island. In September of 2004 while Aleister was living between Boston and Salem, Massachusetts, Danny Crusher & Aleister decided they could each no longer give the DE project their full attention and essentially the female lead singer’s voice just didn't make the cut, so despite being a fan, friend & hired gun performer for Dead Emotion music, Aleister, regressed & decided to reform his older band the Dead Sea Surfers, whose roots stem from a simpler earlier period, and sound coincided with the post punk era & the band for all intensive purposes: Dead Sea Surfers was reborn. Basically, Aleister had recorded about a half dozen songs at sonic design studio in Bristol Tennessee before relocating to NYC. So Aleister basically relocated back to Tennessee and picked up where he had left off one year before continuing to record Dead Sea Surfers music with the Dead Emotion Experience as a guide of what to do and what to not do. Tommy Childress better known by nickname Tommy Sneezy is the bass guitarist, He has played in several projects over the years namely the band Broken Circle and Shadow fall. Both Acts recorded several Demo’s. Tommy is a Bristol, Virginia native and feels extremely comfortable on stage and straight up personality and work ethic is the glue that holds the band in place. Right before Tommy became the Bands Bassist he allowed the prior version of the Dead Sea Surfers to use his practice space with Current Drummer Ryan Chapel for months and then just stepped into the roll as bassist as he became more reliable then the previous member he replaced. Ryan Chapel the youngest and most energetic member is a local native to the tri-cities area and played in several now defunct projects Actually Ryan Chapel and Tommy Childress did perform in the band Shadow fall together. Basically Ryan who has been recording as a solo Artist at Sonic Design Studio, ran into Aleister and after a short conversation both realized they desired the same thing in their approach to music, playing extremely tight, driving, melodic music. Ryan knew to play in Dead Sea Surfers at that time it was going to be some big shoes to fill after Jef Roberts the original drummer died a violent death in March of 2009. Strangely Aleister & Ryan have played on Stage together in 2003 several times as the Dead Sea Surfers, but lost tract of each other while Aleister relocated to NYC and then later returned. The band currently plays as a 3 piece but will eventually incorporate a keys player in the future or as needed. The Band also continues to record new music and play live.
