British pop and classical crossover artist David Garrick was born Philip Darryl Core in Liverpool in 1946. His school choir master discovered his singing talents, characterised by a rich powerful voice which extended beyond two octaves, and David was encouraged by his choir master to take up traditional opera singing. However, the British pop rock scene of the swinging sixties proved too tempting, and David achieved almost instant success with his first recording, "Dear Mrs Applebee", in 1966. He adopted the stage name David Garrick from a British stage actor of the 17th century. David then recorded his first album which was again a hit, featuring the songs "Lady Jane" and of course "Dear Mrs Applebee" The other songs in the album were mostly folksy English ballads. David's version of "Lady Jane" was considered by many as better than the original by Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones and radio stations begin to receive request for David,s version to be played instead. David seem to disappear from the pop scene after his first hit album but resurfaced during the 80's with limited success. Nevertheless some of his songs like "Amarillo" and "Seasons in the Sun" are frequently featured over the air waves. David tried to show-case his opera singing talents when he recorded the album "Appassionata" which features "O Sole Mio"," Santa Lucia" and " La Donna E Mobile". Response to this album was lukewarm.
