All it takes is three young, talented, healthy, heterosexual guys, a computer, a bunch of instruments and a cheap-ass microphone. Add some beer and some other addictive stuff, and those three guys will very soon find each other the coolest and most ingenious persons they know. There you have it. That’s how a band like Cool Genius is born. Cool Genius was formed in the summer of 2005 in Zwolle, The Netherlands, when multi-instrumentalists Erik Neimeijer, Bauke Bakker and Sebastiaan van Olst decided no other combination of musicians could ever match their mutual broad minds, humor, creativity and skills. Cool Genius consists of three talented continuously delivering composers, both individually as well as together. A song is written, recorded, mixed and played in their favorite bar all on the same night. That’s the way it went for more than 60 times now, and counting. The first demo guerilla-spam actions soon leaded to radio airplay on Dutch music radio stations such as Radio 2, 3FM, Kink FM and numerous internet radio stations. The talent-status was also ratified by elections like 3FM’s Serious Talent, OngekendTalent.nl’s Talent Of The Week and Fret (magazine of the Dutch Pop Institute) calling their demo “Demo Of The Year”. On July 17 2007 Cool Genius signed up with the small indie-label “Goomah Music” which resulted in the release of their debut album “Maybe You Should Do That Too”, in November that year. Cool Genius finished producing the album, which consists of only home-recordings, with the help of engineer Guido Aalbers, who recorded the last overdubs, and (re)mixed the album. Guido is known for his mixes for among others Coldplay, Franz Ferdinand and Angie Stone. This band doesn’t match a major label with sales targets and restrictions. Goomah Music, founded by local promoters Arjan Domhof and Frank Satink, accedes the power of creative freedom for the artist: “Of course it’s no use saying you can’t compare this band to any other, because anyone would want to stick a label on something new. But no one can deny that this is at least very original, fresh. Cool Genius composes compact, stunning pop songs with catchy lines and melodies. The songs have a strong sense of intractability, deep grooves, strong harmony vocals and surprising lyrics.” Cool Genius’ energetic live shows have brought them to over 60 stages in Holland and Belgium. Three hours of non-stop power-trio pop music is no exception. The album receives nothing but superb reviews, add a rapidly growing fan-base yearning for the next fire-cracking show and there’s no keeping Cool Genius from success.
