Who? Comatone is Greg Seiler, mastering engineer and electronic artist working in the crunchy and compelling genre of modern electronica. His first album, One Into One Out, was championed by 3RRR and 3PBS in Melbourne as well as 2SER and FBI in Sydney. E-50 is his follow up effort, darker in tone and texture than One Into One Out, but with more variety and depth. E-50 features an expanded sound palette that encompasses fragile atmospheres, refreshing and dynamic beats and world class sound design and production. What? "I don't feel there is one single 'branch on the techno tree' specific description," Greg says, "songs come in singular styles, but albums come as a $1 bag of mixed lollies." Fans of Amon Tobin, Kid606, Depeche Mode and NIN will hear some shared influences and energy. Like Squarepusher, Comatone has the ability to be both confronting and gentle. Where? Greg's albums One Into One Out and E-50 were both created at Blue Mountain Sound (formerly Soundview Studios), the mastering studio where Greg spends his days working and his spare time creating. Greg has lived in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney for several years. Why and How? Composing for Comatone basically means sitting down in front of the computer for hours playing with samples and synths, stacking on the effects and seeing what comes of it. He starts by writing a drum loop and synth parts and then layering these, then writes variations of the parts and edits them together. The editing process is intense, and often the best pieces come quite quickly, in a rush of creative energy. Getting into the 'creative zone' can be at times difficult though. E-50 was created using a Pro-Tools HD system on an Apple G4 and various synths and samplers, both software and hardware. "At the moment I'm interested in the artifacts created by over-using effects and bad editing, and incorporated these into the work on the album," Greg says. Read more on Last.fm.
