He began playing professionally at age eighteen, playing with musicians such as Johnny Alf, Antonio Carlos & Maria Jocafi and Creuza. In the year 1981 started to follow Hermeto Pascoal , playing with him until 1993 , when he began his solo career. He also played with Egberto Gismonti , Pat Metheny , Gil Evans , Marcus Miller , Charlie Haden , Wagner Tiso , Laertius de Freitas and Nico Assumption . Often acts as a studio musician, having participated disc Guinga , Lenin , Sérgio Ricardo , Leila Pinheiro , Marcus Suzano , Paralamas do Sucesso , Caetano Veloso , Gilberto Gil (the album Alive Saint John , 2001). In 1993 has teamed up with Swiss cellist Daniel Pezzotti for recording the album "Rainbow", running for the Sharp Award for 1995 . Participates as a teacher of festivals in Brazil and abroad since 1994 . That year, he founded the groups Bandstand Urban (varied training) and Pife Muderno (Carlos Malta, Andréa Ernest Dias , Marcos Suzano , Oscar Predictor and Durval Pereira ). In 1997 he performed at the Free Jazz Festival with Urban and Pife Modern Bandstand, a show chosen by the newspaper O Globo as the best show of the year. Launched in 1998 his first solo album, called "The Sculptor of the Wind". The following year came the album "Carlos Malta and Pife Muderno" (1999).
