Singer-songwriter, Bill Knight layers his authentic contemporary Cape-folk music with poetic lyrics of depth and intensity. This “ Kaapse Mengsel”, written in a characteristic Bredie of English and Kombuistaal, provides a personal but universal insight into the not so ordinary lives of everyday people, drawing strongly on Myth, Legend and Folk- Lore. Bill Knight was born in Lobatse, Botswana, in September 1957,and moved to Cape Town in early 1966. In 1982, Bill joined the Barleycorn Music Club, a non-profit NGO dedicated to the nurturing of emerging Local Musical talent. In October 2005 Bill was awarded Honorary Life Membership of the Club in recognition of his contribution to Local Original Music. Bill has regularly performed at the Annual Barleycorn Festival, as well as other national festivals such as the Four Winds Festival in Port Elisabeth, the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, Up the Creek near Swellendam, and the Splashy Fen Festival in the Drakensberg.. Bill has self-produced seven albums, one of the latest entitled “Sout”, which is, in many ways, a reconciliation of his English and Afrikaans roots, and which features backing provided by Roger Lucey and Rian Malan, amongst others. This is certainly Bill’s best Work yet. Bill’s most recent album, “Dorsland” was released in April 2008. This is certainly Bill’s best work yet, inspired by the People and Landscapes of Namaqualand and Namibia. “Dorsland “ has received critical acclaim in the Press, and was voted fourth best Afrikaans album of the year by the “Litnet” internet discussion group. The next to be released end January 2009 is called "Brakwater", the third in a trilogy. He is also the founder of the Cottage Club, a Cape Town venue adjoining his studio that features local songwriters. Web site : www.billknight.co.za Read more on Last.fm.
