Astrid Nijgh was born Astrid Maria Nijgh-de Backer on 16 april 1949 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. She has been a singer for almost her whole life. Blessed with a very low contralto voice, she has her own unique sound. After several years of professional singing lessons and performing in several bands, (including two English singles), in 1973 she recorded 'Ik doe wat ik doe' (I do what I do), which became a big hit in the Netherlands. The lyrics were written by her ex-husband Lennaert Nijgh (famous for working with Boudewijn de Groot, and the music by Astrid herself. Lennaert and Astrid kept on working together for a long time, with Lennaert providing lyrics for many songs on many of Astrids albums. Since 1980 Astrid has been performing songs with her own lyrics, in her very own, unique way. After productions with other well known Dutch artists, she has stayed out of the recording business for some years. Today she is back in town, sounding like never before! Though only singles were released in the 70s she stayed active until the present day. Read more on Last.fm.
