College students, budding artists, astute businessmen and gentlemen of honor….this is the only way to properly describe the members of the rap duo, YLS. Kwasi ‘K-check’ Chabwera and Daryan ‘Drizzle’ Wilkinson have developed a love of hip hop early in life and in a few years have turned raw talent into a force unseen in the genre. Creating lyrics and beats that depart from the status quo of violence and unadulterated sex, allowing the listener a glimpse into the true essence of the young adult male. YLS is more than a carbon copy of what is currently floating about attempting to make their mark in the industry by regurgitating embellished tales of untruths and implausible grandeur. This duo embraces their commitment to education, moral integrity and honesty. Coming together (approximately) five years ago in with former members buTTah & Detinator, the legacy of hard hitting yet precise lyrics began. Although the membership has been shaved, there has never been any love lost. Due to the fact that the group was assembled during a time of adolescence, factors beyond the control of the individual members, a physical distance was placed amidst Drizzle, K-check and their former “brothers in rhyme”. Although the loss weighed on their minds, YLS continued to move forward expanding their brand and fan base. The Atlanta born Drizzle admits that his desire to actively pursue a career in music came via the release of Crime Mob’s “Nuck if you Buck” . According to Drizzle, it was the first track that he could relate to, especially since at the time of its release, he and the members of Crime Mob were enrolled at the same school. He recalls hearing it played constantly throughout the day with an enthusiasm that remains unaltered within him. The track was also the first one that Drizzle graced with his lyrical prowess. K-check, on the other hand, has music in his genetic code. He is the son of a songstress who traveled the state of North Carolina captivating crowds with the raw emotion and impeccable strength of her vocals. K-check never fought against his musical destiny, which was made evident when he created a rap group in the fourth grade. Receiving requests to perform along side fellow rising stars in the UK’s ‘Battle of the Bands’………being recruited via independent and mainstream labels……… implementing a timeline for their careers (all inclusive of realistic expectations and goals)…..this is the current state of YLS. With a forthcoming mixtape entitled “Wii Loaded” (release date Sept 1, 2010) and a clothing line collaboration with a UK designer, YLS remain a step ahead of the proverbial curve. In the words of this dynamic duo, “We feel that we do it the best.” Given what I learned via our conversation, their statement is true on a multitude of levels. Privately, YLS created a musical memorial to three fallen peers. Consistently, they create songs to inspire their peers, offering a perspective that is true to the times and plight of young adults coast-to-coast. Read more on Last.fm.
