The Johnson Party plays original music with the intentional goal of putting a positive influence on American/World culture. Drawing heavily from both reggae and the many forms of folk music, the group still at times has a heavy rock and blues rhythm. Not to be pinned down, the Johnson Party strives to continue to surprise audiences with fresh sound, from the pop laden “Apartment”, to bluegrassy “Sweet Amy”. Having several multi-instrumentalists in the 7 piece band, they continue to innovate by mixing in Justin Duff’s sax into folk tunes and Hill’s sitar into rock pieces. Johnson’s acoustic guitar anchors most songs and provides roots to their performances. The Johnson Party originally formed in Atlanta, GA in 2012. Erik Johnson and Kerry Griffee had been singing together at late night backyard jams for several years. Johnson had been lining up gigs, filling out the Party’s line-up with percussionist and friend Erik Wallin, lead guitarist John Hill, Berkeley trained drummer Nate Breazeale and elementary school music teacher / saxophonist Justin Duff. In a stroke of good luck, Johnson answered bassist Tom Spach’s first Craig’s List posting, seeking musicians to jam with a “flower child who got on the bus and never got off”. Spach’s addition filled the needed bassist slot and adds to the positive philosophical slant of the group. Erik Johnson’s involvement in wilderness conservation and the many nature freaks in the band has had them contributing their music to environmental efforts, such as the Bigfoot for Wildlands campaign.
