The Hearers began as a side project in 1994 for main songwriters, Darren Welch & Marc Tweed. Stripped down, stark odes to familial decay, lost wallets and rotary dial telephones made up their first release, a 7 song self-titled cassette that also featured engineering and production work by David Moore, who soon after began playing with the band. In the late 90’s, James Grauerholz of William Burroughs Communications decided he thought so highly of the band’s music that he funded the manufacture of a full-length CD. With that release, The Hearers began to take their songs to the stage and added an array of talent to bring the music to life for live audiences. Their lineup has expanded to a ten piece band featuring electric and acoustic guitars, electric bass, drums, synthesizer, cello, electric piano, pedal steel, harmonica, bells, banjo and trombone. Their live show is known for a sweaty, chaotic spirit that draws audiences in. They have shared stages with the likes of Angels of Light, Hank III, Munley & The Lee Lewis Harlots, Meat Puppets, Split Lip Rayfield (with whom they share a member) and many others. They have released a full length, “Don’t Make the Captain Cry” and an E.P., “Flowers & Flames” on the Anodyne Records label and toured the Midwest and West Coast to great reviews. The band has also appeared on stage at the SXSW festival in Austin, TX and has seen college radio play nationwide. The Hearers new album, “In Dreamlife” marks their fourth proper release and sees the band explore new, at times noisier, more psychedelic, territory while retaining the trademark dark melodies and vocal harmonies that have been featured on even their earliest recordings.
