Sugar Tampaxxx was an argentine indie rock band formed sometime between January and February of 1996 with no other purpose other than to experiment with music. After an unsteady career and line up changes the band split in may 2003 with Sol Shurman (voice, guitar) as the original member. Sugar tampaxxx made an urgent, yet dense and intense type of lo-fi punk with grunge and noise rock undertones including very catchy guitar melodies that could bring Sleater-Kinney to mind. The band started off rehearsing with a couple of original songs as well as covers of 'ashes on the ground' (Half Japanese) and 'short dick men (Gillette & the 20 fingers). In April they played their first show at 'El Dorado'. After playing the underground circuits for several months by the end of the year they had gained a consistent crowd as well the rock press attention obtaining reviews in the No supplement of the newspaper Página 12 being regarded as one of the most exciting new acts of 1996. They released their first demo named 'casado con hijos' and after a few line up changes (notably getting tighter and tighter as a band) they took part in a Sonic Youth and Pixies tribute album called 'New Wave of Kool Things' recording the song 'Flower' (S.Y.) that quickly became part of their repertoire as well as new cover versions of 'Tainted Love' by Soft Cell and 'It's Over' by Daniel Johnston. After several months of rehearsing and new line up changes the band got back on the road with new songs. It was then when Cristian Aldana (El Otro Yo) approached the band with the proposition of recording a record on his independent label Besotico Records. The band proceeded to release 'Adentro', their first LP, which was recorded in three days in September 1999. Sugar tampaxxx's bass player Pol and Cristian Aldana were in charge of the production of the album. The album also included guest musicians for keyboards, violin and viola parts. 'Adentro' came out in October 2000 and the band presented it in 'Podesta'. Sugar Tampaxxx continued gigging sometimes as supporting act for El Otro Yo as well as headlining their own shows with other underground bands. They recorded their first video clip of the song 'Adrentro' directed by Esteban Herrera. By the end of 2002 the band proceeded to record their third and last release 'The Big Sleep'. This time including all songs in English and a new melodic and vintage layered sound the album failed to make a big impression due to band splitting shortly after recording as well as having some trouble with Besotico Records. Sugar Tampaxxx released 'The Big Sleep' independently and played their last show the 24th May 2003. Read more on Last.fm.
