Young, loud, and snotty. It seems as if those three core requirements have been absent in the hardcore scene as of late. In its place: black eyeliner, tight jeans, and thickly gelled hair; hardly reminiscent of Sunday matinees at CB’s. Hailing from that mecca of emo-tinged rock and birthplace of the oh so threatening style known as “fashioncore” comes Scraps and Heart Attacks to drink your beer, rock your town, bang your girlfriend, and inject a little bit of attitude back into hardcore. In early 2001 Scraps, then known as The Heist, got together with nothing more in mind then to make a little noise in their parents’ backroom, cut a lo-fi demo, and try and play a few shows at local Long Island venues such as The Local Seven and Backstreet Blues. After a few practices the band were out there and playing their own breed of old-school ‘80’s inspired NYHC alongside local hometown favorites such as Brand New, From Autumn to Ashes, Glassjaw, and The Movielife. Playing anywhere and everywhere, the band’s reputation on the Island began to grow, earning them an impressive local following and garnering attention from some of the Island’s bigger acts who, at this point, were beginning to gain a substantial amount of attention on the national level. An East Coast tour with The Movielife and A Static Lullaby only reaffirmed that hardcore was indeed in need of a face lift and these were just the guys who were gonna do it. Two years, countless shows, a few hundred beers, a name change, and one 7” EP later, the band’s demo found its way into the hands of Triple Crown Records, home to bands such as Death Threat and Brand New. They immediately set out to recording their debut full length, with Hot Rod Circuit’s Mike Poorman behind the boards. A ferocious blend of Kill Your Idols’ intensity, Agnostic Front attitude, and the classic Murphy’s Law party sensibility, the band are out to brew up some nasty circle pits. Since signing on with the Triple Crown family, the band have gone on to share the stage with some bigger names: H2O, Madball, The Reunion Show, Give Up The Ghost, and Every Time I Die.
