Red Abbott are three multi-instrumentalists who create electronic indie rock via e-mail from their homes in New York City, Providence, R.I. and Portland, Maine. The band consists of Bert Brown (beats, vocals, synth, programming, samples, bass), Chip Means (guitar, vocals, keyboard, bass, flute, percussion) and Joe Madera (bass, vocals, keyboard, guitar, percussion). The band performs live with Shawn Hildonen, formerly of Boston-based band Radka, on drums. Red Abbott's first album, Having Fun Without You, was made over 18 months of recording individual tracks and sending them to each other one at a time. The band has been featured in Popular Mechanics for its Postal Service-esque approach to songwriting and music-making in digital media. Bert Brown also animates the band's music videos, which have won numerous accolades and have been aired on MTV UK's 120 Minutes. Musically, the group has been listed in genres ranging from 8-bit to experimental rock and has been compared to bands such as Of Montreal, The Sea and Cake, Hot Chip and Depeche Mode.
