Raving Noah

Seems like the idea behind Raving Noah is to take European folk music and develop it into a form of rock music like the early rock and rollers did with blues and country music. So, there are tinges of French musette, klezmer, Irish and eastern european gypsy music all done with a post punk rock style. Sounds like a combination of those English bands that came out in the late 70s and early 80s like The Clash, Elvis Costello, The Pogues, Nick Cave and Tom Waits 80s incarnation as a gypsy warbler mixed with European folk music. On songs like Johnny Three Shots, Murder of Crows and That's All Right Les Negrettes Vertes seems like an influence. Other times the tunes are more closer to home and sound like something that would fit on a mixed tape of post punk tunes. Recently bands like Beirut and Gogol Bordello as well as the the Celtic hardcore bands like Flogging Molly and Dropkick Murphys have taken up the cause of interpreting European folk music in a rock context. Raving Noah is more like the former and less like the latter, but really in a strange class unto themselves. Read more on Last.fm.
