The New York Art Quartet was a free jazz ensemble made up of saxophonist John Tchicai, trombonist Roswell Rudd, drummer Milford Graves (succeeded by Louis Moholo) and several different bass players including Lewis Worrell, Reggie Workman and Finn Von Eyben. They formed in 1964 after Tchicai departed from The New York Contemporary Five, and the New York Art Quartet lasted until Rudd joined Archie Shepp's Quartet. They were one of the first groups to record for the ESP Disk record label, and recorded three albums from 1964 to 1965: one apiece for ESP Disk, Fontana and America. The group reunited in 1999 and recorded and released the album 35th Reunion in 2000. Read more on Last.fm.
