For the individual artists, see Murat Aydemir and Salih Bilgin The ney and the tambur are two important instruments in classical Turkish music which are played as a duo as well as in an orchestra. The ney is one of the oldest instruments in musical history. Its origin is in the Sumerian civilisation (fl. 5000 BCE). Since the thirteenthth century CE it has been a significant symbol of sufism. The tanbur is also a very old instrument with its origins in Sumeria. It is the ancestor of the lute, oud, and saz. Its long keyboard makes it convenient for Turkish music. The Neva duo has a classical repertoire, but in addition to written pieces, Turkish classical music has open forms which allow musicians to improvise before or after the pieces. The repertoire includes pieces from important composers such as Kantemiroglu, Tanburi Cemil Bey, Refik Fersan, and Aziz Dede. Read more on Last.fm.
