The project was formed in mid-2008 by founder (and only member) Mike O'Brien. Influenced heavily by early Mortiis, Dead Can Dance, Enigma, Claustrum, and various other smaller projects, Melankolia set out to create a demo in late 2008. Mid 2009 saw the release of Nokturnum on the small American label Beneath the Fog. Although all editions were eventually sold out, the relationship between the artist and the label soon soured, and after fulfilling his end of the contract, Mike severed ties. Work had already begun on a second (and first full-length) album, and, in 2010 (September), armed with the confidence of a new (and much better) label, Germany's Quartier23, Melankolia released Orpheus Down. A definate step forward from the demo, Orpheus Down quickly sold out of it's initial pressings as well. June 21, 2012 will begin the next chapter in this story as Melankolia releases the third album (III) again on Quartier23! Read more on Last.fm.
