in september 2003 dirk darmstaedter was back in teaneck, new jersey where he had grown up for his high school reunion. whilst his old schoolfriends had become bankers, baseball coaches, wall street brokers, lawyers, policemen or cia agents(!), fate had made different career decisions for dirk. moving to hamburg, germany at age 12 (he returned on his own for 2 years at 17) definitly put an end to any pro baseball aspirations. in germany, at 21, dirk founded highly influential german band „the jeremy days“ who went on to record albums with producers such as clive langer/alan winstanely (madness, dexy’s midnight runners, julian cope, etc.) or fred maher (lou reed, lloyd cole, etc), releasing 5 acclaimed & succesful albums for universal music. these days, dirk runs tapete records which has become one the main addresses for fine new indie music in germany, releasing albums by artists such as erdmöbel, niels frevert, missouri, tess wiley, hidalgo, etc. as well as his own records as „me and cassity“. „between wake and sleep“ was recorded on a macintosh powerbook in various locations from hamburg to lüneburg to queens, nyc. drawing on diverse influences such as fred neil, jerry jeff walker to orange juice and talk talk, „between wake and sleep“ is a shimmering collection of remarkable tunes going from intimate to orchestral, laidback to blistering. classic songwriting, this-here are songs that stand their ground even in a stripped environment-something dirk proves playing revered acoustic sets all over europe. hopefully also in a club in your town soon..., meanwhile:here’s the record! music lovers:enjoy !
