"Los Parientes" are a band that come from the municipality of Playa Vicente, in the state of Veracruz, Mexico; located in the region of Xochiapan, on the border between the states of Veracruz and Oaxaca. Since its foundation in 1987, the band is devoted to research and divulge antique “jarocho” music, both in its way of performing, playing and singing, as well as dancing and making verses. In order to do this, the band researches in ranches and communities of the municipality the purest ways of performing and organizes fandangos with the local musicians of each place they visit, thus directly obtaining experience which will be later used in their presentations. Hence, the band is able to execute antique songs and new ones, and for this purpose they work in a composition workshop of jarocho songs. Nowadays, the band gives concerts in which besides playing traditional music, they explain the customs and habits of people from Veracruz within the popular celebration called “fandango”, and all the concurrence is invited to participate. Los Parientes have participated giving concerts along the state of Veracruz and in great part of Mexico. It’s been in Mexico City where they have offered more presentations and where every summer since 1990 they organize workshops previous to the “Festival de Son Jarocho y Fandango” (Jarocho Music and Fandango Fesival), at the Centro Comunitario de Culhuacan-INAH, a festival that already is a tradition in this city.
