There are many groups or performers recording under the name "Jugalbandi", which translates as "music for two players" or simply "duet". Famous Jugalbandis include Pt. Ravi Shankar and Ustad Alla Rakha, Pt. Shivkumar Sharma and his son Rahul Sharma, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and Pt. Nikhil Bhanerjee, Ustad Zakir Hussain and Ustad Sultan Khan, and many others. In Buenos Aires, Argentina the Sargam school of Indian Music also features a Jugalbandi ensemble, comprised of a rotating array of members. Circa 2003, it took the shape of a "double duet", featuring Arial Chab-Tarab on sitar, Rasikananda Das on tabla, Marcelo Ismail Rodriguez on santur and Carlos Yoder on tabla. Last but not least, Jugalbandi is also the name of a band which plays what could loosely be termed as "rock/jazz fusion" (they have also frequently been dubbed "progressive space rock"). The difficulty of labels aside, elements of many styles can be detected in their all-instrumental, mostly improvised music. The group was formed in 1993 by Greg Segal (guitar) and Hyam Sosnow (drums). In an unusual but fully deliberate decision, Jugalbandi's line-up is simply guitar and drums. This gives the band’s sound plenty of space, allowing the two players room to explore an enormous range of musical possibilities, and for many often-masked subtleties to be heard.
