Ikuinen Vaiva´s history: On the fall of 1999 when Arto Tolonen(drums) and Mikko Nissinen(guitar, vocals), who were old friends to each other, after completing their military service, both in the age of 20, they decided to form the Hardest Rocking band with extremely heavy and intensive sound in town Sotkamo, in mid-Finland. Those days they were heavily influenced by hard, Finnish alternative bands such as Kotiteollisuus and Mana Mana. One important thing to mention here about their lyrical decision was that there were not many bands like Ikuinen Vaiva that where singing in finnish like and playing that hard and intense. In fact it was not just a case of choosing the language of their lyrics but Tolonen and Nissinen just felt it more natural to have it sung in their mother tongue than in any foreign language. First for all, one guy (remains here nameless) wanted to have a go as a singer those days. However, it was oblivious that the basic idea/opinion of what kind of music this recently formed band would become to create was totally different with this first singer candidate guy compared to Nissinen`s and Tolonen`s own visions. Anyway, this guy tried his part as a singer in only one single rehearsal, and it was for all to be seen that he wasn`t the frontman for this group. Nissinen was somehow then forced to take the role as a lead while taking care of the riffage at the same time by the fact that propably there would not be anyone around at the time who could make it as a throat man of their band. Nissinen and Tolonen decided to go together on. However, luckily out of the blue, something good came out in sight here - Pete Korhonen who happened to like their musical direction came to join the band. So now the group had a bass player. Place where band rehearsed was Tolonen`s home. Then the serious rehearsing was about to begin despite the fact that Tolonen`s neighbours weren`t quite delighted about it and were actually just about to threat guys with charge to court for accusing them of disturbing their home peace with their raw music and noise pollution during the rehearsal. ( After a while band had to find other place to rehearse. Off Vaiva went and took it`s gear to Sointupes..(the music community center in Sotkamo back then.) Ikuinen Vaiva as a name means somewhat Burden of life, invented by Tolonen during times the first demo Kootut Selitykset (=Compiled Explanations) was recorded. Burden of life described the rocky road the band had been on on it`s years (and were about to travel on it also in the future.) and that the trial to make it up for a really good name for a band was a real Burden of life-So IKUINEN VAIVA WAS BORN!! The name also related to the fact that the way the group had started and tried to make it`s way thru many failures and misfortune in trying to complete their line up as fittable for themselves. Mainly the second guitarist and bass player were chronicly wanted then. The Burden didn`t seem to ease. At start of the fall 2000 Korhonen moved to Jyv..skyl.. but band had found the second guitar player, Seppo Kononen (Who came to play the 2nd guitar on Kootut Selitykset-cd). On spring 2001 Ikuinen Vaiva had enough songs to make this demo. Kononen had a connection to Bank Rock Records-studio in Raahe, Finland. I.V. went for it there to make the recording. Now critically spoken, it didn`t come out as a best quality recording due to the lack of studio time and lack of routine in working there. On summer 2001 Ikuinen Vaiva played local rock festival, Hiukkarok. It had been in the air for some time that Kononen´s intrest was no more there in developing himself as a band member and player. So it was a natural movement for letting the man go off the band. On spring 2002 Vaiva started looking for new guitar player and came out with surprisingly good new material- and they also managed to pick up a new-found Sotkamo youngster, Ville Saastamoinen to replace Kononen. On that same spring Nissinen went to study in college in Birmingham, England and band didn´t practice at this point for 4 months. After Mikko`s return band played 2 gigs in Sotkamo and started looking for studio to make a EP. After recording the second EP, also at BBR, Raahe, Nissinen was really exhausted and sucked dry by straining studio session and for disappointment how unprepared the Vaiva group were for the professional work in the studio. Nissinen has been heard saying he just burned out, which had been doing it`s coming for months earlier for trying when he tried to make Vaiva work mostly by his own work and effort. There was no way the band could make it on further this way. Nissinen wasn`t more interested in pushing the band forwards than this. So band decided to quit itself. However Ikuinen Vaiva EP, Iltapukuheimo (=evening dress tribe) which was released during the time Vaiva ended up quiting itself, turned out to be much more balanced and inspired record than the first one on Nissinen`s own opinion. Despite the fact that Vaiva was no more, something still burned inside... Now years have passed and some serious movements has been witnessed in Ikuinen vaiva - camp. Nissinen and Tolonen has written and started recording new, material with sharp teeth... www.myspace.com/ikuinenvaiva Read more on Last.fm.
