Gary Thomas

There are at least two artists with this name. (1) Gary Thomas (born June 6, 1961) is an American jazz saxophonist from Baltimore, Maryland. He was a member of Special Edition and has worked with Cassandra Wilson, Wallace Roney, Miles Davis and Steve Coleman. He currently the head of the Jazz department at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University. (2) Gary Thomas is an experimental folk musician from Durban, South Africa. After studying Classical Guitar in school he completed a music degree at The University of Kwa- Zulu Natal in 2005, majoring in Jazz guitar. Upon moving to Cape Town in 2006, he recorded his first album ¨Wooden Boxes and Thought Hunting¨, which was officially released in 2009. 2010 saw the release of the hugely successful "Contraption Distoria", with the single "Walls and Floors" gaining tremendous airplay on radio and television. The instrumental track "AWDFH", another crowd favourite, combines intricate finger picking and violently energetic strumming. Often dubbed the “hardest working solo artist in South Africa”, Gary has played most major festivals in the country and regularly tours through almost every city/ town in South Africa. He supported UK Ninja Tunes artist Fink, on his South African tour in 2008, with his duo at the time, Cabins in the Forest. Gary launched his highly anticipated and acclaimed new album "Midnight Atlas" at a sold out run at The National Arts Festival in Grahamstown in June 2012, with a subsequent nationwide tour.
