There are at least three separate bands named "Disband": an all girl band in New York City from 1978-1982, an indie rock band that existed from 1996-2005 in NC and GA.and an industrial band that existed in the late 1990s in Albuquerque, NM. The NYC Disband was an all girl band in New York City from 1978-1982. The members were artists rather than musicians. The band's sound was a type of a cappella No Wave. Disband performed mostly at art venues like Franklin Furnace, P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center and Hallwalls. Disband was popular with the Feminist art audience due to songs like "Every Girl", "Hey Baby", and "Fashions". In 2008, Disband reunited to perform at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center as part of the exhibition "Wack! Art and the Feminist Revolution." [1]. This show originated at Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. The core members of Disband were Ilona Granet, Donna Henes, Ingrid Sischy, Dianne Torr, and Martha Wilson. Early band members included Barbara Ess, Daile Kaplan, and Barbara Kruger who wrote a couple of their songs. Besides their roles as artists, the members were active in the downtown scene. Ilona Granet, Barbara Ess and Daile Kaplan played in other bands like Static, the Y Pants, and The Gynecologists. Martha Wilson was the founder of Franklin Furnace, an exhibition space. Ingrid Sischy was editor of Artforum and Interview (magazine). --- The NC/GA Disband was formed the summer of 1996 in Winston-Salem, NC in the basement. From there were many travels. In 1997/98 To the East they traveled to Greensboro/Chapel Hill. Many came to see them play at Corndale. The aquired the "Nast". After this period in 2003 they traveled south to Athens, GA to record their swan song "In Small Rooms". They decided to stay. A tongue in cheek reference to the experiences of a band that has existed and flourished in the wilderness of the American underground for the better part of a decade and survived. With a serious evolution in their songwriting, and beautiful analog production courtesy of their friends at Athens, GA’s Epi-1 Ecosystem, Disband has created a record that is personal, political, reactionary and faithfully representative of their live sound. For a hard working band from Chapel Hill / Greensboro, NC, it’s a major step forward that is undeniably influenced by the indie rock heyday of their native state in the early 90's along with heavy doses of Sonic Youth, Television, DC Punk, and 60's and 70's guitar rock. Frontman Greg Collins leads the charge with his share of impassioned views, and the backdrop is set by a melodically inclined rhythm section and some endlessly twisting guitar interplay (they like to call them “guitarmonies”). Since 1996 Disband has been pounding out loud, loud noises on sub-par instruments, playing hundreds of shows, covering thousands of miles in an unruly van, and suffering through the throes of education and absence, all the while forging ahead in sharp contrast to their chosen moniker. 2005 saw the Ernest Jenning Record Co. release of At the Scene of the Accident, a split CD with Greensboro neighbors Kudzu Wish, and after some mighty acclaim led the band on a few well-received jaunts around the states, they finally found the time to deliver on a full-length record. The 11 songs that make up In Small Rooms are the bands best. Some are timely and others are timeless, but the final product is a reminder of why we buy rock records to begin with, and it delivers on the promise of a band willing to make every track count. --- The Albuquerque Disband was a "band in which everyone's a member, they just don't know it yet" with a mutable member list, inspired by Pigface. They performed several live shows in 1997 before recording their only album "Audiossuary", which was released for free under a "copyleft" license (this was before the existence of Creative Commons).
