Death of the Neighbourhood

Death of the Neighbourhood is the prolific songwriter Stephen Jones from Babybird. Death Of The Neighbourhood signed to ATIC Records in 2006 and an eponymously titled debut LP was released 2 years later to great critical acclaim. IDJ called it "eerie ambient from another planet" whilst Uncut commented on it's "stark, disarming beauty". It's a 32 track, 2 CD set, the first disc of which is made up of vocal tracks ('songs', for want of a better word), whilst Disc 2 is made up of instrumental pieces. The album was preceded by a limited edition, 7" only release of 'Cokeholes' b/w 'Yellowhills' and 'Lost Youth Pt. 2'. There's a cinematic quality to the album, like it's been recorded in widescreen, whilst track titles like 'The Town Of Half Finished Buildings' and 'Blind Girls Music Box' belie a literary bent. There are songs which comment on the state of things ('Cokeholes', 'Call Girl'), but there are also moments of simple, life-affirming beauty ('A Cool Breeze On The Back Of The Neck', 'Wish I'd Been Born A Baby'). We're excited and intrigued to see and hear how Death Of The Neighbourhood will develop. Work has started on the second album which will be released sometime 2010. Read more on Last.fm.
